Recent Attacks Highlight the Growing Risk to Water Infrastructure
Recent cyberattacks hit more than 30 water and wastewater utilities, with similar incidents reported in at least seven states—a clear sign of how exposed Operational Technology (OT) environments still are when control systems sit on the open Internet.
In several cases, attackers reached Internet-connected PLCs directly, changed passwords or network settings, and knocked automated processes offline, forcing staff to run things manually. Water quality wasn't affected. But the incidents are a warning utilities can't afford to ignore: get control systems secured before an attack touches safety, reliability, or service.
Step one, and the most urgent one, is getting PLCs and other industrial control devices off the open Internet.
